Glass Deposit

We are committed to avoiding plastics wherever possible. Produce and processed food is only provided in compostable or glass packaging. We would like to reuse the glassware as much as possible.

Items that are provided in a glass container are priced to include a glass deposit. Return the jar and you’ll get the deposit back or receive a discount applied to the next purchase. The deposit funds purchases of additional glassware in case it’s not returned.

Does it have to be RHR glass?

We are happy to reuse any glass jar or bottle that is in suitable condition. It doesn’t have to be our jar, as long as it’s suitable for use.

Cleaning and Reuse

Glassware is sanitized before reuse. We use several different methods.

  • Jars storing dried goods are washed with soapy water and dried thoroughly.
  • Bottles storing liquids are treated with an oxidative cleaner (PBW) and rinsed with hot water. When bottling with new liquid, we perform an acid rinse (diluted phosphoric acid) to kill microbes.
  • Glassware used for canning will be washed with soap and water. PBW may be used if there is residual material stuck to the wall. The jars are then heat treated (via steam or boiling water) prior to canning.

Metal bands and solid metal lids are cleaned with soap, water, and heat treatment.

Canned products will always use new lids. Previously used canning lids can be safely reused to store vacuum-sealed or unsealed dry goods. Those will be cleaned with soap, water, and heat treatment.
