Description
A Perennial Kale plant we picked up somewhere and have propagated for years. Produces variegated leaves and has a small, bushy growth habit (especially compared to the Perennial Tree Collard!)
Winter Survivability
These plants are cold hardy, though our experiences with in-ground winter survivability are mixed. We have had several plants live through the winter in the garden and in pots kept outdoors all year. However, sSnow and moisture seems to be a larger challenge in the Mt. Shasta climate, with fungal infection and rot potentially setting in toward the end of the winter season. We recommend planting next to your house for best winter survivability.
We plant these in large pots (5-15 gallon) and move them into our greenhouse for the winter, where they survive without additional heat and can be used as a food source in the winter.
